Friedrich Mendler studied process engineering at the Technical University of Dresden and has been working at the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems ISE since 2020. From 2021 to 2025, he pursued a PhD at the University of Freiburg, developing HYSCOPE, a spatially resolved optimisation model for hydrogen systems, and graduated in 2025 with summa cum laude. At Fraunhofer ISE, Friedrich Mendler served as project lead in the German hydrogen flagship project “TransHyDE-Systemanalyse” and contributes to numerous research projects on hydrogen system modelling, hydrogen infrastructure and imports, as well as energy system analysis. In 2025–2026, he spent six months as a guest researcher at AIST in Japan, where he worked on extending HYSCOPE to include PtX and CO₂ technologies, funded by the DAAD.
