Interim CEO / Keynote Speaker · American Cancer Society · company speakers →
Dr. Frederick is a distinguished physician, surgeon, educator, and academic leader whose career seamlessly bridges medicine, business, and higher education. Born in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago, he came to the U.S. to attend Howard University at just 16 — and remarkably earned both his B.S. and M.D. by the age of 22. Over decades, Dr. Frederick has built a formidable record: after completing surgical oncology training at MD Anderson Cancer Center, he practiced as a cancer surgeon, directed cancer-center work, and taught medical students and surgical residents. In roles ranging from provost to provost over health sciences, and ultimately as the 17th president of Howard University (2014–2023), he led sweeping institutional reforms — expanding academic offerings, strengthening fiscal stability, boosting enrollment and graduation rates, and helping the university achieve “Research One” status. More recently, he has expanded his impact as interim CEO of the American Cancer Society and its advocacy arm, working to improve cancer outcomes and reduce disparities in care. Today Dr. Frederick remains committed to patient care, academic mentorship, and public health — a rare leader whose life work spans healing, education, institutional leadership, and advocacy.
