Sumbul Ahmad Desai, MD serves as Vice President of Health and Fitness at Apple, overseeing the development and roadmap of health and fitness products, including early feasibility, scientific validation, user experience, and SaMD regulatory approvals in nearly every region around the world. Because scientific research is the basis of Apple’s health and fitness products, Dr. Desai’s team is tasked with conducting an extensive number of research studies at several stages of product development, and the group’s quality teams ensure continued high standards, as they report out to governing bodies. Under her leadership, Apple has embarked on landmark research studies, partnering with leading scientific institutions — including Stanford Medicine, Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, UCLA, the American Heart Association, and the World Health Organization — to advance discovery using iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. Several product features were created based on these studies’ real-world evidence, including the ECG app, irregular rhythm notification, mental health and wellbeing, cycle deviations, and walking steadiness, as well as the recently-launched hypertension notifications, sleep apnea notifications, hearing aid, and hearing test. Dr. Desai recently served as Vice Chair of Strategy and Innovation in the Department of Medicine at Stanford Medicine, as well as Associate Chief Medical Officer at Stanford Healthcare. She also serves as Clinical Associate Professor in the Department of Medicine at Stanford School of Medicine
