Decarbonization in the textile supply chain depends on understanding where emissions occur and how they can be reduced across production, use, and end of life. Dynamic life cycle assessment offers a way to evaluate the influence of biogenic carbon storage and emission timing, providing clearer insight into the role that natural fibers like cotton can play in current and future sustainability strategies. This presentation focuses on cotton as a case study, highlighting opportunities for decarbonization through actions such as regenerative agriculture, extending garment lifetimes, and optimizing end of life pathways by avoiding landfilling through composting, recycling into building insulation, and combustion with energy recovery. Together these approaches demonstrate how cotton can help improve the sustainability of the textile supply chain while broadening the conversation to include the benefits of temporarily storing biogenic carbon in cotton products.
