Marty Makary, MD, is a surgical oncologist, researcher, best-selling author, and nationally recognized leader in health care. Prior to joining the FDA as the 27th Commissioner of Food and Drugs, he served as the chief of Islet Transplant Surgery and on the faculty at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, where he founded the Johns Hopkins Center for Surgical Trials and Outcomes Research. Dr. Makary has led cross-disciplinary research on a range of subjects, publishing more than 350 peer-reviewed articles. Additionally, he is the co-developer of the Surgery Checklist used in many operating rooms around the world today.
