Joaquim Segalés es licenciado y doctor en veterinaria desde 1991 y 1996, respectivamente. Posteriormente se diplomó por el European College of Veterinary Pathologists en 2000 y por el European College of Porcine Health Management en 2004. De este último fue presidente en el período 2013-16. Trabaja en diagnóstico e investigación de enfermedades del cerdo desde 1993. Es co-autor de más de 350 publicaciones internacionales.
