Joanna Averley is the Chief Planner for England, overseeing planning decisions, legislation, policy and practice on planning and placemaking; and is head of profession for Town Planning in the UK government. She has worked across the planning and development cycle on projects in the UK, with a focus on delivering well designed buildings, spaces and places and working as a consultant, client, adviser and civil servant. Joanna is an experienced master planner due to her roles on international recognised projects like Manchester City Centre and the London Olympic Park. Her previous roles are: leading work to realise the integration and regeneration benefits of major transport projects (High Speed 2 and Crossrail 2), Deputy CEO of the Commission for Architecture and the Built Environment (CABE) for 10 years, CEO and Trustee of Centre for Cities and CEO of charity LandAid. Non-executive roles have included being London Mayor’s Design Advocate, Trustee of MOLA (Museum of London Archaeology), Chair of the London Borough of Wandsworth’s Design Review Panel and external examiner of the London School of Economics Cities Programme. She represents the UK government on a number of international fora including the OECD and G7.
