Bio-photonic nanotools, including organic nanoparticles and photochromic compounds, represent a gene-free strategy for wireless neural photostimulation. Current studies in animal models are addressing their potential application in the cure of human neurodegenerative diseases. Organic nanodevices are starting a new era of tissue electronics, in which light-sensitive molecules and live tissues integrate to create hybrid neuronal interfaces for neuroprosthetics.
