<p>I am a physicist specialising in lasers, photonics, and sensing. I do experiments and theory, and on a good day they agree with each other; on even better days, one of them leads to new insights in the other. All of my work has commercial applications, and I collaborate with several companies to transfer new lasers and laser applications into the real world. </p> <p>At the moment, I'm working a lot on LiDAR: for sensing ocean properties from boats, drones, and underwater platforms; and for characterising tree canopy cover from planes and from space. </p> <p>I am a passionate teacher, and have taught the full range of undergraduate, masters, and postgraduate courses. I have trained eight PhD students, and many more as associate supervisor.</p>
