Claire Utton is a research fellow in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering at the University of Sheffield, UK. She completed her PhD in the area of nuclear waste encapsulation and has worked at the French Atomic Energy Commission, France, the Institute of Transuranium Elements, Germany, and the Tokyo Institute of Technology, Japan, in the areas of thermodynamic measurement and thermodynamic modelling of materials. Her research interests are based around using thermodynamic modelling to predict the behaviour of materials, under nominal and extreme conditions. This includes developing thermodynamic databases using the Calphad method supported by key experiments (e.g. measuring the thermodynamic and physical properties of materials). She applies this to different material systems including nuclear materials and novel refractory alloys. She is an active board member of the IOM3 Materials Chemistry committee.
