After studies in Zurich, a PhD at the MPI for Psycholinguistics, and postdocs in Mainz and Berkeley, Balthasar Bickel became professor of linguistic typology in Leipzig in 2002 and chair of general linguistics in Zurich in 2011. Since 2020, he has been the Director of a national research center in Switzerland, the NCCR Evolving Language, which unites over 40 research groups across the natural, social, and computational sciences to unravel the past and future of human language. His main interests are the (neuro-)biological and social mechanisms that shape the evolution of languages over time and space and how these mechanisms emerged in our lineage.
