Arthur Lydiard

Athletic Coach

Legendary New Zealand coach, whose training system revolutionized distance running in the 1960s and influenced thousands of coaches around the globe. Lydiard was an accomplished distance runner in his own right, winning New Zealand national marathon titles in 1953 and 1955. But it was as the coach of Olympic stars like Peter Snell, Murray Halberg, and Barry Magee that he gained his greatest fame. He pioneered a system of periodization of training that included high mileage and hill work to build underlying strength.
