Professor Alexander Phillips is a Consultant Oesophagogastric Surgeon at Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Professor of Oesophagogastric Surgery and Surgical Education at Newcastle University. He is Head of the Northern Oesophagogastric Unit and Clinical Lead for Upper GI Cancer for the Northern Cancer Alliance. His clinical and academic work focuses on improving outcomes for patients with oesophageal and gastric cancer through innovation in surgical care, pathway redesign, early diagnosis, prehabilitation, and the implementation of new technologies including robotic surgery. Alongside his clinical practice, Professor Phillips has made a substantial contribution to surgical education and faculty development. He has served as Director of Undergraduate Surgery at Newcastle University and as Director of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. His educational interests include curriculum design, workplace learning, trainer development, and the role of education as a patient-safety intervention.
