Stuart is a seasoned public affairs and transport specialist with 20 years’ experience working in European trade associations, UK automotive companies and innovation consultancies before coming to Transport Scotland. Today, Stuart is the Scottish lead on the ZEV Mandate legislation reducing road transport emissions and leads on public charging policy.

Michael began his career as a primary school teacher, working for seven years in that sector. However, most of his working life has been spent in road safety, working as a local road safety officer in Strathclyde, before moving to RoSPA in 1990 as Road Safety Manager (Scotland). In 2004, he took over as Director of Road Safety Scotland (RSS). RSS is responsible for developing road safety learning resources for use mainly in schools, and for behavioural change campaigns tackling the main causes of harm on our roads. Many early road safety initiatives were done because people thought they were good ideas, but Michael is an advocate of an evidence-led approach to road safety. He has tried to ensure all work undertaken by RSS is informed by evidence and, particularly on the campaign side, guided by robust behavioural change principles.

With nearly 50 years of experience, having overseen 23 FIFA tournaments across all six confederations and more than 1,000 stadium games globally, Alan will share exclusive insights from pitch research at Tennessee and Michigan State Universities, plus a behind-the-scenes look at this year’s FIFA Club World Cup.

Gemma is a Chartered Civil Engineer and has worked with Transport Scotland for over 13 years. Having worked in both the public and private sectors, she has experience of the procurement, design and construction of large infrastructure projects as well as road maintenance. Gemma is Head of A9 Dualling Programme Delivery at Transport Scotland.

Dr Neil Ferguson is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering at the University of Strathclyde. His research focusses on the development of low carbon, socially-just, environmentally friendly and climate resilient transport systems. He has led or contributed to numerous research and consultancy projects and has published in leading journals. His work has been funded by the EPSRC, MRC, NERC, the Scottish Government, Scottish Road Research Board, ClimateXChange, Scotland Beyond Net Zero and industry. He is a contributing author for the risk descriptor on roads within the Infrastructure Chapter of the 4th UK Climate Change Risk Assessment (CCRA4). He is also a founding member of the University’s Active Mobility Hub.

Scott is a chartered civil engineer who has worked with Transport Scotland since 2005. Network Maintenance covers road and bridge maintenance. The Roads Team undertake a wide range of duties. They oversee the work of the Operating Companies who manage and maintain the trunk road network on our behalf. Working in partnership with the Performance Audit Group they ensure that the Operating Companies deliver a high-quality service and ensure programmes of work focus on areas of most need and deliver value for money. The team also undertake a lot of engagement with internal and external stakeholders and deal with a considerable volume of correspondence, enquiries and briefing. The Bridges Team are responsible for overseeing the inspection, operation, maintenance of trunk road structures assets to ensure they are safe and available to use. There are over 2000 bridges and 3900 other trunk road structures. Key structures that generate a lot of public, media and political attention include the Erskine Bridge, Skye Bridge, Kessock Bridge, Forth Road Bridge and the new Queensferry Crossing. The Structures Team also have asset management responsibilities, bridge related standards and are the principal source of specialist advice, within and out-with Transport Scotland and to Ministers, on bridge and structural matters.
