Cathy graduated from the University of Sydney in 1992 and worked in mixed animal private practice in Australia and the United Kingdom. Cathy returned to Australia to undertake a rotating mixed animal Internship at the University of Sydney, then an imaging residency at the University of Melbourne, with some time at the Ohio State University. Cathy worked for 25 years at the Universirty of Melbourne as a Radiologist and educator. Cathy currently undertakes clinical work, teleradiology, teaching, and a small amount of research. Cathy has a passion for all types of imaging but truly loves a challenging thoracic and abdominal radiographs.

Aarti graduated from the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) in 2006, before completing her rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at the Queen Mother Hospital for Animals, RVC, in 2007 and her PhD in canine inflammatory bowel disease at the RVC in 2011. Aarti then completed a three year residency program in small animal internal medicine at Cornell University in 2014 and is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (SAIM). She also completed a two year small animal clinical nutrition residency program at the University of California-Davis in 2016. She is a diplomate of the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (Nutrition). Aarti is currently an Associate Professor of Gastroenterology, Internal Medicine & Nutrition at the RVC.

Jill is currently Professor of General Practice at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and Director of Professional Development. She is actively involved in undergraduate teaching and continuing professional development (CPD) at the RVC. She regularly consults at the RVC's first opinion practice, the Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital. She is the senior editor of Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology, the 2nd edition of which was published by Elsevier in 2008. She is also senior editor of Clinical Reasoning in Veterinary Practice, the 2nd edition of which was published by Wiley-Blackwell in April 2022. Jill is the coordinator for the main small animal clinical CPD streams at The London Vet Show and Singapore Vet.

David obtained his veterinary degree from The University of Sydney and after graduation and a short spell in practice he was appointed as a small animal clinical instructor at The University of Sydney and then enrolled in a PhD programme in the Faculty of Medicine looking at various aspects of the pathophysiology of diabetes mellitus. After completing his PhD, David was appointed as a member of faculty in small animal medicine at The University of Sydney rising to become Hospital Director of The University Veterinary Centre. In 2001 David was appointed Chair of Small Animal Studies at the Royal Veterinary College and head of the newly formed Department of Veterinary Clinical Sciences. Over the next 8 years the department grew to be one of the largest and most successful clinical departments in the world with substantial research grant funding and an outstanding reputation for clinical excellence. David is currently Deputy Principal. Despite his heavy administrative load, David maintains a keen interest in small animal medicine generally and endocrinology in particular. His current research interests include insulin resistance states in diabetes mellitus and the use of ‘big data’ from general practice for managing animal health and welfare. David is the author of over 150 scientific articles, numerous book chapters, is joint editor of the highly successful textbook “Small Animal Clinical Pharmacology” now in its second edition and the soon to be released textbook entitled “Logical Approach to Clinical Problem Solving.” He has had an ongoing interest in relevant continuing education for practitioners and in particular the value of the problem-oriented approach to small animal medicine.

Serena graduated from the University of Bristol in 2007. After several years in general practice, she embarked upon a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC), followed by a specialist internship at the Animal Health Trust. Serena completed her ophthalmology residency at Langford Vets in 2018. In 2019, Serena moved to the RVC where she is a now Lecturer and co-Head of the Ophthalmology service.

Dave Dickson, one of our Directors, is an RCVS Recognised Specialist in Cardiology, having joined the HeartVets team in 2011. He lives and works in south Wales, where he offers cardiology referral clinics. Dave regularly lectures regularly to local, national and international audiences has presented research at international conferences. His research into feline dyspnoea won the prestigious Best Research Communication at the European Congress of Veterinary Internal Medicine. He has published many original research articles and collaborates with colleagues in veterinary medicine and human exercise physiology from around the world. Dave is one of our interventional cardiac surgeons and is also on the auscultation and Doppler Echocardiography panels for the Veterinary Cardiovascular Society.

Andy graduated from The University of Nottingham and initially spent two years in small animal general practice. He subsequently undertook a small animal rotating internship and medical oncology residency at the Royal Veterinary College, also completing a postgraduate diploma and master's degree. He gained his Diploma in Small Animal Oncology from the European College of Veterinary Internal Medicine (ECVIM) and is now a Lecturer in Veterinary Oncology. Clinically, Andy has a particular interest in canine mast cell tumours and leveraging sentinel lymph mapping to improve the accuracy of cancer staging. His research interests focus on the diagnostic, therapeutic and prognostic role of the oncobiome, particularly the intestinal microbiome. He is also interested in novel diagnostic and therapeutic strategies in veterinary cancer patients, particularly those where there is translational relevance. Andy leads the RVC's Comparative Physiology and Clinical Science (CPCS) Oncology Research Group, and is also a member of the RVC's clinical research ethical review board (CRERB). He holds a Home Office personal license (PIL) under the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act. He is Associate Editor of Veterinary Oncology. Andy is a trustee of the Zeus and PJ Charitable Foundation, a charity aimed at funding lifesaving cancer treatment for dogs whose owners are not able to do so. Andy contributes to the wider veterinary profession by providing oncology CPD, and is a regular invited speaker at numerous national and international conferences.

Matthew graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2016. He gained experience in referral and charity practice before completing a rotating and surgery-specific small animal internship at the University of Edinburgh. He completed his surgery residency at the Royal Veterinary College in 2023 and became a diplomat of the European College of Veterinary Surgeons (ECVS) in 2024. He continues to work at the Royal Veterinary College and enjoys all aspects of soft tissue surgery, including emergency, oncological, and thoracic surgery, with a particular interest in minimally invasive surgery.

Jon graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 1992 and then spent several years in general practice. He is currently the newsletter editor for the Companion Animal Behaviour Therapy Study Group, and has co-authored a text book of behavioural medicine.

Tom graduated from the Royal Veterinary College in 2010. Following an internship at Langford Veterinary Services and 4 years working in emergency practice, he finished his residency in Emergency and Critical Care in 2018, gaining ACVECC Diplomate status the same year. In 2021, he achieved ECVECC Diplomate status and RCVS Specialist recognition. His clinical interests focus on extracorporeal therapies, including clinical perfusion, dialysis and plasma exchange, as well as multiple organ dysfunction syndrome, sepsis and acute postoperative cardiothoracic critical care.

Laura graduated from Cambridge University in 2011 and worked in small animal practice prior to completing a rotating internship at the Royal Veterinary College (RVC). She finished her Emergency and Critical Care residency at the RVC in June 2019 and she gained the American Diploma in Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care shortly after. She is currently a lecturer in Emergency and Critical Care at the Royal Veterinary College. She has a particular interest in the management of acute kidney injury, endocrinological emergencies and point of care ultrasound. She has lectured both in the UK and overseas on a variety of topics and is the president of the newly formed Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Ultrasound Interest Group

Dr Michael Hewetson graduated from Onderstepoort, South Africa in 1999. He spent time in private equine practice in the UK before completing a residency in equine internal medicine at the University of Glasgow. He is a registered RCVS specialist in equine internal medicine and is a diplomate of the European College of equine internal medicine. He has a PhD in equine gastroduodenal permeability studies and has an active research interest in equine gastric ulcer syndrome. He currently works as a clinical educator at the Royal Veterinary College in London, where he an associate professor in equine internal medicine.

Zoe is a veterinary surgeon who graduated from Cambridge University in 2003 and is a European and RCVS Recognised Specialist in small animal internal medicine with interests in geriatric medicine and the decisions made by people on behalf of pets. She has worked in general practice, referral clinics, university teaching hospitals and charity practice. Her mixed methods PhD at the Centre for Evidence-based Veterinary Medicine, University of Nottingham explored how vets and owners make decisions about dogs with osteoarthritis. Zoe has published over 20 peer reviewed journal articles in a range of journals about subjects including quality of life assessment, canine osteoarthritis and nasal tumours. She has extensive lecturing and small group teaching experience in the UK, Eastern Europe and sub-Saharan Africa, and was on the World Small Animal Veterinary Association continuing education panel from 2011-2018, acting as Chair for the last two years. She currently combines general practice clinical work at PDSA Nottingham with veterinary consultancy, research, membership of the RCVS Ethical Review Panel and editing “What is your client thinking”, a column in the Veterinary Record written by owners and farmers. My HBC expertise is in communicating ideas and problem solving barriers to change in applied settings.
