Responsible for the Coast Guards U. S. Domestic Fishing Vessel Safety Program, overseeing policy, industry outreach, reports to Congress, is Alternate Designated Federal Officer to the National Fishing Safety Advisory Committee, oversees nations FV District Coordinator and Examiner programs, and represents the U. S. Delegation at the International Maritime Organization (IMO) on U.S. fishing industry matters. Tenure with U.S. Coast Guard: 42 Years. Jorge Segovia is a senior engineer on the energy transition team at the American Bureau of Shipping. A graduate of the University of Texas – Rio Grande Valley, he spent the first 6 years of his career in service of the design of machinery for engine, fuel storage, refueling, and dispensing. He has also managed teams in the design of the very same systems for production and safety. He now works with the American Bureau of Shipping developing rules and requirements for alternative fueled vessels and other alternative energy solutions.

Lauren comes from a long background of work at sea but has transitioned to life on land as a passionate advocate for small boat fishermen and coastal communities. Her family owns and operates the FV Norfjord, a longline and troll vessel out of Sitka, Alaska. She was appointed to the Advisory Panel to the North Pacific Fishery Management Council in 2021 and also serves as an Alaska Advisor to the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission.

A fourth-generation lobsterman from Maine’s Midcoast, Dustin Delano has dedicated his career to protecting the future of New England’s fisheries. After decades on the water, Delano made the difficult decision to step away from fishing to become a full-time advocate. As chief operating officer of the New England Fishermen’s Stewardship Association (NEFSA), he has become a strong voice for fishermen across Maine, New Hampshire, and Massachusetts. Delano’s leadership has been pivotal in addressing regulatory challenges, including offshore wind development, vertical line rules, and the recent gauge increase retraction. His work connecting harvesters, dealers, and policymakers has strengthened the industry’s representation at every level, from the Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission meetings to the halls of Congress. Known for his integrity, empathy, and nonpartisan approach, Delano continues to fight for fishermen’s rights and the long-term sustainability of the industry he grew up in.

Will is a principal and naval architect at Glosten. He joined the company in 2004 after earning his bachelor’s degree in ocean engineering from Virginia Tech and spending three years in the oil and gas industry. Will supports a broad range of naval architecture work at Glosten, helping to guide young engineers through complex design decisions. He specializes in new design, onsite construction support, and refit projects involving passenger vessels, research vessels, ferries, tugs, barges, and various floating structures.

I first started working with commercial fishermen in New Hampshire soon after graduating from UNH. On that first trip out into the Gulf of Maine, observing spawning cod at sea with a fun-loving, sea-smart, joke-riddled Captain, I knew this would be part of my future. After spending several years in Jamaica doing volunteer work and then land-based aquaculture, I started a small seafood business on the island, encouraging Jamaican restaurateurs to buy local seafood. When I returned home, I went back to where I had been one of the first employees: Great Bay Aquaculture. While there, I worked in various roles for the country’s first land-based hatchery for marine finfish, in Newington, NH. When an opportunity to interview for the General Manager position for the local Community Supported Fishery (CSF), NH Community Seafood, came along, I applied and got the position. That was in 2015, and since then, I have watched as several veteran Captains retire from the northern New England commercial fishing industry with no one to replace them in the wheelhouse. The time-honored concept of succession in this industry is dying. A project in the making since 2019, thanks to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Agricultural Marketing Service grant program, the New England Young Fishermen’s Alliance was founded in 2022. In my spare time, I like to travel, spend time on the water with my family and friends, see live music, and raise poultry and organic veggies and herbs while enjoying time on my lakeside “farmette” in Northwood, NH.
