Abdul Mozzamdar

Group Social Value Director · PSR Group

Bio

Over the past 20 years Abdul has been championing Social Mobility and Early Careers recruitment initiatives to drive ED&I, whilst simultaneously filling skills gaps through engaging with untapped talent from cohorts such as Service Leavers, Domestic Abuse Survivors, Prison Leavers, Displaced Talent, and many other underrepresented groups.

'We have a chronic skills shortage in the UK, we have an ageing workforce with not enough talent entering the bottom end to replace the out going talent. We are no longer able to attract talent from the EU post Brexit which therefore means we are fishing from the same talent pools here in the UK. So where do we find new talent pools? Where will these individuals come from? Come along and hear me talk about the ways in which we have changed the face of our workforce and that of our clients by filling skills gaps through purpose driven recruitment'

Gail Godden

BCM Scaffolding Services Ltd

Bio

Forward thinking Business Development Manager with over forty years of experience in the Electronics and Fire safety system industry. Director and company owner for sixteen years. I always strive to assist organisations growth by exploring and developing new markets, media platforms, and better relationships with existing customers. Satisfaction is key for both clients and employees. Return business is really important which is a true reflection of team work and trust between all parties. I enjoy building relationships, cementing client/supplier confidence and understanding. I have an active, some say extrovert personality which has served me well over the years. I am always keen to meet new people. discuss opportunities and I am looking forward to the London Build Expo 2023, see you there.

Statement:

"I have been in a male dominated industry my whole working career and things have changed but there are still mountains to climb. It does bring a smile to my face to see so many more women in the construction industry to when I first started out back in the 80's. I truly believe we are getting there, women are now being recognised for what they can bring to the workplace. Being offered more opportunities from an early age is refreshing but we need to keep going, encouraging diverse thinking from early on in schools educating young women that they can pursue any industry they desire. I also think that there is still a lack of confidence in young people and this again needs to start at school age and also from parenting. It is all good and moving in the right direction, be strong, be proud and dream big everyone! we've got this!"

Che harison wara

Engineer · Talon engineering Ltd

Bio

Dedicated construction engineer with over eight years of experience working on large and small construction projects. Proficient at coordinating with contractors, suppliers, engineers and other project stakeholders and reviewing project designs. Recognised by former employer for outstanding talents in areas of report writing and budget projections.

Statement:

The challenge of getting to a place where the construction workforce is sufficiently diverse to be representative of its customers and stakeholders can seem overwhelming. Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) statistics indicate that the construction sector is still only 15 per cent women (2 per cent on-site), 6 per cent BAME workers, and 6 per cent disabled workers. Figures on LGBT+ representation in the industry are too unreliable to share. However, there are bitesize actions that organisations and employees can take to extend the conversation. Clarity on benefits and blockers can also help drive momentum. The business case for having a diverse workforce, inclusive of minority groups, is well made. For example, the 2020 McKinsey report, Diversity Wins: Why Inclusion Matters, found that companies with more than 30 per cent women executives were more likely to outperform companies where this percentage ranged from 10 per cent to 30 per cent. In the case of ethnic and cultural diversity, in 2019, companies in the top quartile for ethnicity diversity outperformed those in the fourth quartile by 36 per cent in profitability. In the construction industry, the skills shortage (both the short term shortage caused by Covid-19 and Brexit, and the longer term shortage from construction workers hitting retirement in the next 15 years) puts the issue into sharp focus. Encouraging diversity seeks to make the most of untapped potential ' and being inclusive helps retain the talent you have. Diversity of talent is also key in ensuring the industry remains relevant in a fast-developing landscape. For the s

We must rethink our actions'how they affect climate, biodiversity, and resources. Sustainability is our promise for a liveable Earth and a healthier life.
