"The Lifecycle of an Artwork"

Bio

Christine Steiner is an experienced art lawyer, handling transactions on behalf of diverse art-related clients including museums, foundations, cultural organizations, collectors, artists, artist estates, creative businesses, universities and commercial entities. Prior to private practice, she served as Secretary and General Counsel of the J. Paul Getty Trust, as Assistant General Counsel of the Smithsonian Institution and as Assistant Attorney General in the Office of the Attorney General of Maryland, where she represented the State colleges/universities and subsequently served as Principal Counsel of the Maryland State Department of Education and counsel to the Maryland State Board of Education. Christine Steiner was a longtime adjunct professor of law at Loyola Law School in visual arts law, and has been a visiting professor in programs of international art law in Florence, Italy and Cambridge, England. She writes frequently on art law topics, including a recent law review article, currently serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the Copyright Society of the United States, is a Board member of the Holt/Smithson Foundation and serves as an Arts Commissioner for the City of Ojai, California. She is active in the arts nationally, and regularly speaks to museum and collector groups on such topics as provenance, title impairments, artists' rights, consignment agreements, acquisition and sale of art collections, insurance and conservation, traveling loans, donations to museums and estate transfer issues. Of particular interest, she has advised real estate developers, governmental entities, museums, nonprofits and artists on the requirements and nuances of artist moral rights issues, in particular under Visual Artists' Rights Act (VARA).

Bio

Ashley Innes, ISA AM is the founder of the appraisal firm Ashley Asian Art and is an experienced Asian art specialist and provenance researcher. Her specialties include Buddhist antiques, ceramics, Indian miniature paintings, and musical instruments. Originally from San Francisco, she now spends her time between the US and London. Ashley holds two degrees in Asian art history from the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London, both with high distinction. Previously, she earned degrees in musicology at Scripps College and Christ Church, University of Oxford. She is the current chair of ISA's Antiques, Furniture, and Decorative Arts Committee (AFDA) and serves on the Conference Committee.

Bio

Jonathan Malindine, NAGPRA Officer at the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, will speak at Assets 2026: Desert Horizons Conference. Repatriation represents a growing interest among appraisers, arts professionals, and collectors. At last year’s conference, Thomas Kline, of Counsel at Schindler Cohen & Hochman LLP, shared his experience with stolen art and restitution efforts from around the world. This year, Jonathan will focus more sharply on Native American cultural patrimony and how appraisers can assist clients with voluntary, ethical returns.
